Doctor Aldana, and Sombra, had been worried about something, but s/he was having a hard time finding a way back into the discussion without being rude. Finally, there was a break in the conversation, and s/he spoke up, “We have some concerns about some missing beings.” S/he looked to the captain.
“We can discuss those offline, after the meeting” Akio said, mindful of the time. He wondered why the Doctor decided to wait until the end of the meeting to bring something like this up.
[Conference Room]
“Doctor, you mentioned some concern about missing beings?” Akio said as the officers started departing or milling about the room.
Doctor Aldana felt hir face and ears flush. S/he found herself wondering if hir captain could tell the difference given the fine fur that covered it. S/he shifted in hir seat and tried to sit a little taller. Sombra came now and set his head in her lap in that goofy-ball way of his that was so cute. It made it hard for hir to keep a straight face, but s/he managed. At least s/he felt hir complexion return to normal. “Yes captain,” s/he said with authority. S/he took a deep breath and felt hir confidence return to normal as s/he finished. “I’ve only just now received a list, so I’m not sure if it’s complete. A Mister Masterson, and Ensign on the fire-suppression team. Also, I have not been able verify Luuna’s whereabouts. There may be others, I have not been able to review the whole report.”
“And may I ask, why am I just hearing about this now?” Asked Harry, Sif perked up as the tension began to rise with in the room, Harry looked back at the Doctor and continued “And when were you going to tell me?” He finished “Or was I going to be the last to know?”
The CMO turned to face the CoS. “The alert came in on my PADD not all that long ago. I’d guess as the chaos of the battle clears more may be added. It looks like a general bulletin, you should have it.”
As Harry picked up his own PADD and found the same memo come through, he thought to himself oO Why now has this come through? Oo as he knew this looked bad, He said, “I know we lost some good officers in the battle,” as he looked up from the PADD, he continued, “but we will need to check this out,” as he looked back at the Operations chief.
Tolkath had remained at the table and watched the exchange, wondering what, or whom, was missing? “Fire suppression teams would fall under Operations. Mister Jones,” he called to the Operations Officer “The Doctor is reporting you have unaccounted for personnel, is that correct?”
Ruk checked his PADD. “I have reports of possible missing personnel. I say possible, as reports are still coming in. And to be honest, there’s enough people unaccounted for, I’m wondering why this one is so important?” He watched each person in the room. “I admit, we need to find out what happened, but we’ve got so many reports coming in, I think it’s too early to tell.”
“Who is the important one?” asked Harry once more scanning through the names once more, as he looked again back at Ruk over the top of his PADD.
Had Arthur had ridges, he would’ve dug his nails into them. He instead pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. “Here I am removed from Human society for 16 years and I know human figures of speech better than you apparently.”
He sighed, “what I meant is that I don’t understand why this one-person Lieutenant Aldana named is so important compared to others.”
“That is what I asked Ruk,” replied Harry as he looked back at Aldana, “So Doctor, why is this person so Important?” as he wanted to hear it from the Medical officer. oO I hope it is not some Adie that was here without me knowing Oo as he knew that would not go down well with Sec HQ.
~Tell them about sister,~ Sombra encouraged.
~No, I don’t want to seem like I’m putting us above anyone else who may have loved ones missing too.~ Aldana sighed this was starting to feel like an interrogation. “I apologize, I didn’t mean to elevate one crewperson over another. He just so happened to be the first person who came through on the list I received.” S/he looked at hir PADD again, and – trying to be careful of showing off the screen – briefly brought up access to hir ‘nanny cams,’ hir quarters were still empty. S/he swiftly returned retrieved the M.I.A. report back to the forefront hoping no one saw hir screen. “Everyone on here should be equally as important to all of us, as anyone else is.” S/he finished, addressing no one in particular.
Tolkath exchanged a look with Tachibana while the three Department Heads went back and forth. “Unaccounted personnel were not brought up at the meeting…” He said quietly to the Captain.
Akio watched the exchange. Once again, he was grateful for capable officers, yet Tolkath had hit on exactly what Akio was thinking.
“Crew lives are paramount to me, as you know,” Akio tried to keep his temper balanced. “In the future, missing personnel need to be reported. How do we know they were not vented out into space during the battle?” Akio looked into the eyes of the junior officers. “You lead this crew as Senior Staff. You are responsible for their lives. I want an accountability check immediately and report within 2 hours with the latest list of missing personnel. Am I clear?”
“Yes sir. However, my department hadn’t gotten this information completely to me by the time of the briefing.” Ruk admitted, “it’s partially my fault. We were testing out a new way of reporting casualties and missing, which we had intended to test prior to the battle. I’ve found a few flaws in my program.”
“Thank you, Mr. Ruk, I appreciate your candor, will you please have a report on your findings submitted to my office by the time we arrive at Canterra.” Zamora requested before turning back to his coffee.
“And I will try to find out how these missing persons left the ship and where they are heading,” replied Harry looking back at the Captain, “if Mr Ruk would like to assist?” looking back at Arthur.
“Left the ship?” Ruk replied “Who said they left the ship? I thought we were talking about MIAs, now you’re saying you think these people are deserters?”
Aldana observed the conversation. S/he looked over at the Klingon – for that was how he identified as, and that was how s/he thought of him as – “I appreciate your initiative in putting your program into place Mister Ruk; if there is anything I, or sickbay can do to help…”
Just then Sombra nudged hir, and s/he couldn’t put it off any-longer. “Fellow crew-people, I’m sorry, I have one more being to add to the list. I didn’t want to come across as selfish, but I am unable to locate Luuna on my personal ‘nanny-cams’ in my quarters. I’m not sure why, but the computer is not able to locate her microchip either.” S/he bit hir lip in order to focus. “Please be on the lookout for non-humanoid life-forms as well.” The doctor finished with a silent sigh.
“While the working animals are a valuable and important part of our crew, and every effort will be made to find them, do keep in mind that personnel must be our first priority in this search,” Juan cautioned.
Doctor Aldana 365 was shocked that a Starfleet officer would say such a thing. S/he might expect that from someone who believed they were the epidemy of intelligent design and created in a deity’s own image. “Is that even pertinent at a time like this, we’re performing a search, not triage.” S/he observed; hir own recent experiences off a 16+ hour shift still fresh in hir mind.
“Well, no,” Juan answered. “I don’t know how pertinent it is yet, I hope not at all; but we may find we have to start thinking in triage terms, depending on how serious a situation this turns out to be.”
“Then why are you making those decisions before you know the facts?”
Juan was silent for a moment, swirling his coffee in the mug as he thought. “I suppose that is right, such considerations are likely premature. I apologize.”
"Find our crew, all of them," Akio ordered before dismissing the officers.
