Mental Evaluation (Backpost)
Posted on 13 Feb 2019 @ 7:23pm by Captain Akio Tachibana & Lieutenant Junior Grade Wyndsor Emerson, Ph.D. & Lieutenant Junior Grade Radun Dran (Dec - Jan 2389 TRNSFR After Second Battle of XFY)
Mission:
Ka Hakaka Maikaʻi - The Good Fight
Location: Chief Counselor's Office - Sickbay - Deck 11
Timeline: 2 hours before the Second Battle of XFY
Dran wasn't happy. Not only had the CO just questioned him about his drinking habits, he was now required to undergo a mental evaluation for one reason or another.
Whatever it was, it was ridiculous, and a waste of valuable time. He was trying to get his people ready for any potential intergalactic incidents involving this mission, and this wasn't helping.
He stopped outside the Counselor's office and jabbed the chime angrily.
"Come in," Emerson called out, her office doors automatically opening upon command. She had seen Radun's name on her schedule, but she still wasn't quite sure what the purpose was. It was a last-minute add and appeared to be ordered by command, not a routine requirement by Starfleet Medical. Normally, such emergencies sessions were prompted by medical emergencies, or events like violent crimes in which a member of the crew fell victim. In this case, however, she was a bit in the dark.
Nevertheless, she had a job to do and she would get to the bottom of things one way or another. "Hello. I'm Wyndsor Emerson. Please, make yourself comfortable."
Dran entered the room, slipping into a nearby chair. "I'm a very busy man, so lets get this over with."
Wyndsor quirked an eyebrow at him. "You might not be aware of this, but your attitude is a factor in any psychological evaluation, particularly those ordered by the command staff. Condescension and impatience won't serve you well. In fact, it's in your best interest for me to take my time. Will you tell me what prompted command to order this evaluation from your perspective?"
Dran stayed quiet for several moments, before choosing his words carefully. "I'm the chief diplomat on board, its therefore my job to provide accurate diplomatic information on our allies and enemies. Its a job that requires my full attention, so I am a very busy man." He continued without waiting, "The CO caught me drinking on duty. So he ordered me here."
The irony of his profession coupled with his demeanor wasn't lost on Emerson, but she decided to move forward. " I see. What prompted you to make that decision?" Drinking on duty was strictly prohibited, and given that he had used the word 'caught ' to describe the experience, it seemed he knew that.
"We've just been under combat, had our doctor seemingly betray us, and I've had some stuff from my past come back around full circle. There was an aged Chardonnay I wanted to try since I felt we'd have a little downtime." Dran leaned back slightly, wondering how much he'd need to speak to Admiral Shotton if he recommended Dran be relieved of duty.
"I don't believe anyone would object to you drinking some during your off-duty hours, but if I'm understanding you, you chose to drink while you were still working. I believe that's the point of concern here. I'm wondering if you can see where the command staff is coming from in that regard?" The mention of current stress and past issues did not escape her notice, but she wanted to be clear about the issue concerning command before they dove into related issues.
"I understand that," Dran said, "I'm a stress drinker."
Emerson nodded. "How long has that been going on? I know you mentioned some past stuff has come up. Has that been recently or has it gone on longer?"
"It's been going on for years. No I'm not gonna talk about it." Dran said, frowning. "Its rather personal."
"Alright," Wyndsor returned easily enough. "Let's talk about your drinking. Exactly how many years are we talking about that you've been drinking on duty?"
Dran was silent before he decided this wasn't going to work and left the session.
