It's Bigger than My Last Posting

Mission: He ho'omaka hou 'ana - A New Beginning
Location: USS Hawaii, Shuttle Bay

Tyler leaned forward to get a better look at the ship he'd been reassigned to. The window hindered his view, but it was still a big ship. A damn big ship. Sovereign class heavy cruiser, USS Hawaii. So new she wasn't even fully assembled yet.

"Beautiful sight, isn't she Lieutenant?" Asked the Petty Officer piloting the shuttle.

"She is that." Tyler agreed, not taking his eyes from the ship. "She's bigger than my last posting."

"She's bigger than most postings in the fleet sir." The Petty Officer said with a laugh.

"My last assignment was the USS Ajax, a Wallace class." Tyler said looking away from the ship and towards his pilot.

"A Wallace? That's a postage stamp, not a real ship." The PO snorted. "Pardon my language sir, but what the hell were you doing on a Wallace?"

"Commanding." Tyler said with a smile.

Ajax might have been a Wallace, a postage stamp, a sardine can, or whatever else you might call it, but she had been his. His command and his responsibility. Eight months he'd been for all intentions, a Captain of his own vessel with his own crew. Granted that crew was smaller than the number of men and women he'd have working on one shift on the Hawaii, but they had still been his crew.

The shuttle bumped to a gentle landing in the shuttlebay and Tyler stood up to grab his duffel. It wasn't even completely full, but it contained everything he'd had aboard the Ajax. The rest of his belongings would be forwarded from Deep Space 10.

"Captain's probably in his ready room or on the bridge this time of day Lieutenant."

"Got it." Tyler said, slinging the bag over his shoulder. "Thanks for the ride."

"You bet sir." The Petty Officer nodded and turned his attention to the post flight checklist. Tyler shook his head as he disembarked and heard the Petty muttering about a Wallace class as a command.
