With the Hilo sorted, that left everyone on foot to deal with.

"Everyone, move inland, we need to put some space between where we are, and where the Gorn expect us to be. Black Element, take the Major, and take up a position on high ground, and construct an observation post, remote cameras in the treetops, and disguise your on the ground presence. Rocks, fallen trees, leaf litter, however you do it, make sure your hiding places look natural, and make sure to use thermo-screens while you're doing it, we don't want a stray heat signature betraying us."

"White Element," Gregor continued, "take Ms. Kelly, and set up somewhere you can provide covering fire for Black Element. Same procedure, set up some early warning devices, and find, or construct, something to hide yourselves. Cortez will be with me."

Cortez felt a big hand tap her shoulder and then point into the dark forest off the beach. She nodded and fell in behind the Marine, moving as quietly as she could as they made their way through the trees.

Orders given, Gregor Moved deeper into the jungle, with the command element in tow. Once the other elements were in place and had reported their positions to him, he began looking for some helpful concealment close by. Finding a place where two dead trees had fallen, forming an X on the edge of a natural depression, he signaled to the rest of his group. vaulting over the tress he found the area usable, with only a small puddle of water in the bottom of the depression, he wrenched free a couple of slabs of bark, and covered it, not wanting to risk finding out of there was anything unhealthy in it. Then he set about applying the sheet-like thermo-screens to the backs of the fallen trunks while the others took up positions.

A few minutes later a distant whining could be heard, almost insect like at first, but gradually getting louder and nearer. It was coming from across the lake, on the far side where the river entered the stretch of wider water, and it was along the route they had taken on the way into the Landing Zone.

As the sound closed it became clearer, a distinct whining drone, somthing turning at high speed, with a secondary sound joining it, the rush of a hull on water.

The noise echoed back from the woods now and whatever craft was coming it had entered the lake, but the only trace of it in the pre-dawn darkness was a white fleck of wave crest where it's bow wave parted the water.

The craft slowed and began a series of passes up and down the lake, starting on the far side and methodically searching as it moved steadily closer to the Landing Zone Beach.

"This is it," Gregor hissed as the Gorn Craft came nearer, "Stay silent for here on out."

Cortez moved to the other end of the logs, pulling out a night vision device she began watching the lake.

The noise was much louder as the craft came nearer, sounding almost fan-like.

Gregor gripped his rifle, poised to spring up and begin firing.

The craft moved steadily back and forth over the lake, when it reached the area where the Hilo had submerged it seemed to slow and did several circles over the area, then resumed it's search pattern.

Within minutes it was coming along the shore, as it approached the beach it passed through a shaft of moonlight. The craft was some form of Air Boat, a long, low, wide hull; at the rear was a large engine, powering a ducted-fan which vented through two large steering planes. Forward of the engine was a raised helm position, in front of that were two rows of seats. Up in the bow there appeared to be a heavy weapon on a swivel mount.

There were four dark figures in the craft; a pilot, one in the seats and two stood in the bow. Two of them carried large weapons, the other in the bow seemed to be holding a kind of tricorder like device in one hand, with a cable running to a sensor wand, held in the other.

The only light on the Air Boat came from the device's tiny display. The figures appeared to be in conversation, as the one with the tricorder device was showing the display to the other two, but nothing could be heard over the noise of the fan.

The Air Boat moved past, then slowed and turned, coming back to the beach. Suddenly the craft's engine died and it slowed to a stop, drifting silently just off shore. The dark shapes moved around, one came up to the weapon mount in the bow, there was a hum as the weapon powered up. Two others jumped in to the knee deep water, one going to the left, the other right and began wading ashore.
