Mission:
Ka Hakaka Maikaʻi - The Good Fight
Location: Deck 22 Marine Offices
Timeline: 1/19/2389
[ON]
[Deck 22 - Bravo Marine Special Operations Company]
Two days after the battle Bolingbroke was at his new desk, still getting to grips with his duties as Company Commander. There was a chime from the door and his Admin NCO stuck her head in "Sir, I have a Sergeant Kyle Walken here. He's one of Major West's replacement drafts. He was Thirty Second Marine Regiment, aboard the Wyoming
Bolingbroke nodded "I know him, send him in"
Kyle scratched his head as he waited for the NCO to let him in, he gave her a nod once she gave him the go ahead. After walking inside he stood at attention and gave a salute to Edward, taking note that his rank pin was that of a Captain now.
Bolingbroke stood and returned the salute. "Stand easy Sarn't" He said and pointed to a chair and retook his own "Take a seat. You get through to your family?" He recalled that had been the man's concern after being rescued from the Gorn cruiser.
Kyle looks back to the chair that was offered to him, he sat down at the request of the Captain. "Not yet, I sent them a message. At least they will know I'm alive and that is good enough for now."
"Alright, not sure if you took me up on the offer or if you were ordered back aboard?" Bolingbroke asked
"I spoke with Commander Zamora and choose to serve aboard the Hawaii, I mean you did save mine and the lives of the other Wyoming personnel. So it would be kind of rude if I just jump ship." Kyle attempted to make a small joke.
"Ok, well we have a need for replacements and I can use a good Marine. I have a slot as Element Lead for Blue Tactical Element in my Second Team." Bolingbroke explained
Kyle pondered for a moment, "Then I will be that Marine sir. You can trust me to lead the Second Team to the best of my ability until you need me to do something else or find someone better."
"Fair enough" Bolingbroke nodded "The Team consists of yourself; three Critical Skills Operators, Sergeant Jonathan Jackson, Corporal Julian Lee and Corporal Felix Norman and Starfleet Special Forces Reconnaissance Corpsman Erik Van Pier.
The CSO's are all good at what they do, but you have some more experience and seniority, so you get the Element Lead slot" Bolingbroke said. He did not mention that he'd moved the previous Blue Element lead to replace Miller in Orange Team, who were still feeling the loss and would do better with a somebody they knew than a new face. "You up for the challenge?"
"They sound like a great team, yeah I was born for this challenge. You don't grow up a Marine to turn away from something like this." Kyle states with confidence as he looks the Captain in the eyes.
"You've also probably got the most experience of dealing with the Gorn" Bolingbroke said "In the coming weeks, as we prepare for our next mission, I'm going to be looking for input from you on how they act and behave, any insights or knowledge you have of them can help us plan on what to expect from them. Even small details could be important"
"Don't know how much help I can be, but I will tell you anything and everything I remember from my time as a POW."
"How about fitness" Bolingbroke asked "Mental and physical? Several weeks of what you went through as a POW has got to be rough on mind and body. We may be short handed but we're heading back into combat and I'll still need you to clear with Medical and Psych, make appointments with medical and Counselor Wyndsor to get that squared away"
"Minor wounds, after the first few days I think I scared them. I didn't stop fighting and I fought every time one of them came near me." He laughs softly. "I honestly think it's the only reason I wasn't killed or had one of those weird implants." Kyle thought to himself for a moment. "But I will make appointments as soon as the two of them are available, I got the Psych talk from the Commander as well."
"Good." Bolingbroke nodded "One last thing, Element Lead is usually a Staff Sergeant billet. I'll make you Acting Staff Sergeant for now. Show me you can do the job and I'll make it permanent. Any questions on your new assignment?"
"No questions sir, I give you as much as I gave all my company leaders. Everything I can muster." Kyle rubs his chin for a second. "Is there anything you want to know about me sir?"
"How did you get that" Bolingbroke indicated the scar that ran through Walken's lip "And why do you keep it?" It looked like it could have probably been easily removed with a dermal regenerator but Bolingbroke had met plenty of Marines with scars who refused to have them removed.
Kyle reaches up and traces the scar and thinking back to basic training, "I keep it as a reminder that even things that should be safe can turn around and hurt you. I know it sounds dumb and I could get it fixed no problem but it's something I choose to keep."
Bolingbroke nodded "I can see the point in that. Well I think we're done"
"Oh one final thing" He added "The Hawaii is a relatively new ship, this is was her first battle. There is a good relationship between Corps and 'Fleet here. The Captain and Major West want it that way and I want it that way.
There will be no rivalry or friction with Starfleet personnel, clear?"
"No need to worries about that, I get along fine with Fleet personnel. Hell, the one person I know on this ship is Fleet." He answers.
"Alright. Welcome to Bravo Company" Bolingbroke stood "Go find your rack, meet Second Team and Blue Element. I'll tell them to expect you. Carry on Staff Sergeant"
"Thank you again, Captain, I will head off to meet them all right away." Kyle stood up from the chair and salutes Bolingbroke.
Bolingbroke returned Walken's salute and watched the man leave his office. He had been totally serious, even the smallest bit of insight could be of value when they next encountered the Gorn and this time he knew there would be more than just a ship's crew to deal with.
