Bollingbroke stepped off a turbo lift and headed towards Sickbay, where he expected to find Stevens.
He was not happy that the Ensign had chosen to casi-vac himself out of the cargo bay when his dog was incapacitated by the Gorn. It was a poor show of leadership to have abandoned his team like that.
He saw Stevens leaving Sickbay and called to him as he approached. "Ensign Stevens! We need to talk, but first thing, how's your dog?" He asked
"What about?" asked Harry as he looked down at Sif who was still pawing at her nose and eyes, as he looked worried about Sif,as he wasn't sure what the Gorn Doctor had sprayed in her eyes. As he had left the battle to bring Sif here, he knew that Sif came a first as he was Sif's Handler.
"What about? Well, about your actions during the search" Bollingbroke said levely. "In particular, your abandoning the search like that. A pretty poor show of leadership to just beam off and leave your team and others in the middle of a mission." He trailed off. Did this young officer really not realize where his duty lay? he wondered to himself.
"I am Sif's Handler," replied Harry looking back at Marine, He continued," Also I had the Gorn contained in the Jeffries tube, so he wasn't going anywhere," as he stroked Sif once more. He asked," Would you leave an injured Marine behind?"
"Leave behind? We're on the ship!" Bollingbroke shook his head amazed Stevens didn't not udnerstand "And non life-threatening injury? Damm right I would! And so should you!
You're the Chief of Security aboard this vessel, you happen to have a dog as well, but Chief of Security is your role and your responsibility.
You can expect people under your command to get hurt, even killed, your job is not to beam out, desert everyone else and hold their hand in sick bay!
Your job is to step up and lead, especially when your people start getting hurt!
I'll tell you this Ensign, you just got yourself a reputation as an officer who beamed out with his dog rather than finish up the mission! Seven Marines and four of your Security crew witnessed that, junior ranks who look to you for leadership.
You think they are going to trust you next time, when the enemy is shooting back or you think they are going to wonder when you will find an excuse to beam out and abandon them?!"
"He was contained in the jeffries tube Lieutenant," as Harry turned to face the Marine, "He was not going anywhere, we had him trapped, So I beamed here with Sif," as he stood looking at at him once more, He finished," You know what, I might suddgest to the Captain that you Take one of the K9 Division,"
"That''s not going to happen Ensign" Bolingbroke shook his head "Dedicated K9 Handler is a job for enlisted personnel, maybe a junior officer, not for a Team Leader or a Department Head. Certainly not one who thinks their dag comes before the rest of their duties.
And for your information Ensign, the Gorn was not contained. He managed to break through one of the force fields and could have got access to the rest of the Jeffries Tubes if he hadn't have been stopped. You might have found that out, if you hadn't beamed yourself out!"
Bollingbroke had had enough. He turned and walked away. They were going into battle against the Gorn in a few days and now he believed the Hawaii's Marines could not trust the ships' own Chief of Security to stick around when the going got tough.
Harry watched the Marine go and if he belived that Harry could not be trusted then neither could his Security teams trust the Marines when it came to the enemy boarding the ship, he knew that there was distrust beween the two and they had to lead thier respective departments.
