Mission:
Hahai i na pilikua nui - Hunting Monsters
Location: Deck 14, USS Hawaii,
Timeline: T -10 minutes before Canterra, 0635 hours, Stardate 66130.0
The four person team climbed out of an access hatch, tearing through small opening. The damage control element sprinted from lower level engineering towards the front of the ship. Next came a two deck climb along a ladder of rungs up to deck 14. Taking the turbolift to a deck facing power issues was never a good idea. They could be stranded or maybe even catapulted from the ship.
It was always much more simple to climb. Each enlisted fleeter carried a silver satchel filled with engineering tools. The first person to exit was Damage Controlman Naz Jadi.
She was in charge of this small team. The only thing she could think of was setting the example. There was an unwritten understanding about being a damage controlman. If a ship came under fire once, the same spot could easily get hit twice.
They all knew that what looked like a safe corridor could explode in a moment. There were many safety systems in place. None of these were guaranteed to work, especially while in the area during an attack. Therew was always the chance of being vaporized or thrown into space if the final line of forcefields failed.
Controlman Naz was finally starting to understand how things worked on the ship. She had an idea of what was wrong here, simply needing to visually confirm things.
Her satchel swung, still tucked behind her after the climb. "Cooper. You're with me. We're going to power distribution." She pointed to the others. "You two check the affected panels in Section 7."
The ship's main power distribution center was on Deck 14. She expected to find damaged relays which were behind the surge. The other controlmen would need to bust into the circuitry and force things back into place.
It wasn't long until Jadi and Cooper ran into the distribution center. There were panels and equipment in the access room the controlman chose to look for. She took out a sonic driver and set it to scan the various connections and access points.
The silver tool had a glowing, two pronged end. It can be used to interact with fields. It could help identify if a dangerous energy field is ahead. It made sure the panel was safe to approach.
Cooper scanned the panel with a powerful magneton scanner. "It's fluctuating... Variance at 9 percent."
The ship had overworked a few systems while redirecting power around damage. This caused the panels in section 7 to become dangerously uncontrolled with power surges.
PC3 "Naz tapped her commbadge. Naz to Halvorsen. Don't get near that panel until I clear you."
=/\=Affirmative=/\=, replied the other controlman from a different section of the deck.
Naz switched tools, placing the driver back into the satchel and pulling out a hyperscanner. "Get a decoupler ready", she told Cooper.
Cooper would rather not get too close. He knew that if Naz made one wrong move, the panel would erupt in a wave of force and sparks. He watched as the Bajoran woman moved with eyes as calm and relaxed as he'd ever seen.
The hyperscanner flashed and twittered as it interacted with the system. She knelt alongside an access point, using the tool to make manual adjustments. Holding out a hand, she took the decoupler. It's end spun as she took it into her main hand.
She fought with the system for a few moments, trying to realign the system's internal harmonics. The power was basically being wrenched back into safe parameters. The tools were wrenching back and reigning in the ship's power.
A beeping sound soon told the controlmen, things had fallen back into normal range. PC3 Naz tapped her commbadge. "Okay, you should be clear to start realignment. We're on the way."
=/\=Acknowledged=/\=, replied the second team from afar.
"Let's go", said Jadi. She gave her teammate back his decoupler, packed away her spanner and took off towards the affected section. By the time they arrived, they saw the panel fully opened. Since it had surged, it needed more intensive work.
"It popped", said one of the one's who'd been there. The panel's face was scorhed. If anyone had been standing here, they would have been thrown back and burned by the sparks. If damage controlmen tried to work on this panel before the distribution system was adjusted, they would have also been affected.
The ship's main power control network being so close to the affected panel caused a dangerous wave of disruptions across deck 14. They would have to check the entire deck, but started with the most important places.
"Fix the internals", Naz told him. "I'll log whatever we need to replicate to replace this. Get ready to run over to the nearest replicator Cooper."
"But... What if it surges?" Cooper was the newest member on the team, taking his first cruise. PC3 Naz had taken him under her wing.
"Then it'll shock you or build crooked parts... Then you fix it."
Her reaction made the other controlman nervous. Jadi laughed while he froze. "Just scan it first. Look. Every panel on the deck isn't rigged to explode. You can use the replicator." Her dark eyes locked onto his almost mockingly.
"Roger", Cooper replied sheepishly.
She wanted to send him to the replicator because she knew he was nervous about being in an attacked zone. It was something she wanted to help him get over. She didn't understand that Cooper would always be anxious. Her cold nature towards risk only made Cooper more nervous.
"And let me borrow the decoupler again", Naz said while Cooper began to open his satchel. The other two were doing much of the repair work on this panel. One sat on the floor, twisting a tool inside of a panel under the screen. She had determined what needed to replace after a scan, marking the items on a small PADD.
After exchanging the PADD for the tool, Jadi set off to find the next access point. It would probably need to be adjusted as well. Power should slowly be recovering from the damaged section's hiccupping relays.
