Good as Gold

Mission:
Ka Hakaka Maikaʻi - The Good Fight
Location: Security Office
Timeline: 19 Jan 2389
Beckett tried to not tap his foot as he waited outside the chief of security's office. It would have made him look impatient, and that wasn't at all what he felt or what he wanted to project to the bustling office, filling with officers and crewmen he'd have to work with soon. Supervise.
No, this was nerves, which was madness as this wasn't his first time in such a workspace. Unless he ignored how the ship was hurtling for a war zone. Then it was definitely his first time.
As the door opened, Sif perked up from where she had been laying quietly whilst her master worked at his desk, she knew that someone wanted to enter the room and moved to the side of the desk and sat at the corner looking at the door as it slid open.
But then came the direction from the petty officer to head in, and Beckett ducked through the doors and advanced on the desk, stopping before it with crisp precision. "Ensign Beckett, new Assistant Chief of Security, reporting for duty, Sir."
"Greetings Ensign," as Harry replied as he looked up from his PADD, he continued, "This is Lady Sif, my K9 Partner," as he leaned back into his chair as he finished, "I do hope you like dogs as you will be seeing a lot of her,"
Beckett gave the dog, and the dog's introduction, something of a nonplussed glance. "I'm fond of animals, sir, so I don't expect Lady Sif and I will have any problems," he said, nevertheless somewhat taken aback. "The K-9 unit are a common element in considering shipboard security?"
"They are here on the Hawaii," replied Harry looking back at the Ensign as Sif moved towards him to get a smell for the officer so that she knew him as a friend, Harry said, "I think she wants to get to know you Ensign?" as he smiled at how Sif was taking to the officer.
Beckett looked down at Sif, and unclasped his hands from behind his back to extend one towards the dog so she might have a good, investigative sniff. The corner of his lips twitched. "I'd rather she recognise me enough to tell friend from foe, yes," he agreed as Sif conducted her olfactory judgement of a new officer.
"would you be willing to have a K9 yourself Ensign?" he asked as he knew that if the ensign was then that would be good, he finished, "It is Optional," as he didn't want to force the young man into it.
"I'm not trained as a K9 handler, sir," said Beckett neutrally, as he looked back up at Stevens. "And that's an additional responsibility I'd rather not undertake until I'm better integrated with the security department's processes. I do have some questions on that front. I'm aware the ship is headed for a serious war front, which will of course place demands on us to prepare for boarding parties, acting and repelling. But Hawaii has a significant Marine contingent. Do we share responsibilities for shipboard combat with the detachment, sir, or do we take on more of an investigative or defensive role?" While he left his hand by his side for Sif's sake, he had switched directly back to a brisk officiousness.
"That's fine," replied Harry looking back at Beckett, "as to your question I will be setting up a training routine with the Marines to prep us for boardings," he continued, he looked back again at Beckett," But we also do investigations," he finished.
"Obviously I imagine as deputy in the department I'll need to keep abreast of everything we're doing," Beckett said thoughtfully. "But is there any aspect of our responsibilities you would like me to prioritise, sir?"
"I'd like the department fully up to date on boarding drills so that they know their roles when it happens," replied Harry as he didn't like how it had gone down with the Gorn attack.
"Very good, sir." Beckett pulled out his pocketbook and pen, flipping to a clear page to begin his notes. It wasn't the most common habit to prefer to write by hand, but he found it cemented things better in his head than tapping it into a PADD. "Are these boarding scenarios already established in the training regimen and the department is just in need of drilling? Or is there further development needed - factoring in cooperation with the Marines so we don't trip over each other's feet, for instance, or as our intel on the Gorn's tactics develops?"
"After the last Gorn attack, the department didn't know what and where they were ment to be," replied Harry looking back at his new deputy, He continued, "we lost some good officers, so I want them drilled so they know what to do and work along side the marines," as he leaned back into his chair. He finished," I don't know if their are any programs on the holodeck,"
There was the faintest eyebrow quirk as Beckett continued writing in a tidy script. "Then I will make this my first priority, sir. No good if the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing in a crisis." He looked up from the pocketbook. "Is there anything else I should know?"
"I also would like a evaluation done on all the teams," replied Harry looking back at his new deputy as he had to sort out the sections as he needed to appoint his section heads "and make sure they go see the CMO for their Physicals," he continued. as Sif went back to her position that she had before Beckett arrived, He finished, " thats all Ensign, Dismissed,"
The young ensign flipped his pocketbook shut before stowing it. "Thank you, sir. I'll get to work."
The disadvantage of writing things by hand, Beckett reflected as he left the office, was that he'd have to transcribe an awful lot more of this later now he was on active duty.
Still. Old habits died hard. But it was time to pick up some new ones.
