Squared Away

Posted on 06 Aug 2018 @ 9:15am by Lieutenant Junior Grade Artemis Ward, M.D. (Jan 2389 - TRSNFR After Gorn War)

Mission: Ne Me'e Laua Na Paio - Heroes & Villains
Location: XFY
Timeline: 16 Jan, 2389

No sooner had Dr. ward received news that his transfer to the Hawaii had been approved then he started packing. And now, he seemed to be nearing completion, he ran through the checklist in his mind once more intent that nothing would be left behind. As he did this, he removed a thick frame from the wall which contained a collection of 20th century surgical tools and set it carefully into a container filed with other fragile items.

As he flitted around his quarters, stowing the last few items, he considered his prospects in his new posting. A starship, a front line starship, but a starship nonetheless. Up until now he had served aboard stations exclusively, they certainly had their perks, space, resources, personnel, all things that made his job easier. And, starships certainly had their dowsides, they were lacking in almost all the amenities of a starbase, and there was the added liability that ships often went into danger.

But, on balance, Dr. Ward would have said that he would prefer a starship, even with all of the problems that entailed. The frontier had been producing revolutions in medical science for centuries at this point. Outside of research and development a shipboard posting was the way to get your hands on all of the latest innovations, all the newest drugs and devices.

And, even if the danger was something he could do without, there is an impulse in the heart of virtually every surgeon to be where they can make the most difference. Whether born of an altruistic desire to save lives, or a selfish drive to boost your own 'high score,' there was a part of them that wanted to test their mettle right at the point of the crisis.

With the packing concluded, he tagged the last containers for pickup, and walked out the door. Without looking back he made his way to the docking port where his new vessel was waiting. He spared a thought as he went for his former colleagues, still working to clean up after the disaster that had befallen the station. He was sure they would be able to manage without him. The station was in the process of shedding non-essential personnel, to get them out of harm's way, and to clear space in their now diminished facilities.

When he stepped through the airlock he was greeted by an ensign in red. Dr. Ward handed over the PADD with his orders and breezed through the formalities before brushing off any help finding his way around, he had studied the ship's layout quite carefully thank you.

In his office on the upper decks, The XO noted that another new addition to the medical staff was complete.
