Mission:
Ka Hakaka Maikaʻi - The Good Fight
Location: Hula's Bar & Lei Stand
Timeline: January 19th, 2389
Nila sat quietly in Hula's Bar & Lei Stand, she was officially off duty and she wanted to relax. She had yet to really meet with anyone other than the Captain so she was alone at a table, a data PaDD in hand with the basic tests she had time to run on the various sensors. She lifts her cup of hot coffee and takes a small sip as she goes over various reports.
"Not interrupting, am I?" Cassidy stopped before the table, holding his own steaming mug. He offered a lopsided, apologetic smile before extending his right hand. "Rafe Cassidy. CONN. Figured there's not much of a welcome wagon on board right now, even for new senior staff. Mind if I join you?" He gestured to the free seat.
Nila looks up at the human standing near her, she knew him from her time on the senior staff meeting. "Anyi Nila, Ops." She answers quietly before setting down her PaDD. "You are not interrupting anything." She motions to the seat when he asked to join her.
"Neat." He pulled up the chair and set down the coffee, wrapping his hands around the mug. "I know sometimes when you've got something important to read, that's always the time people try to interrupt. But you've ended up with a hell of a time to settle into a senior staff position."
"It's nothing important, just looking over the status and various output of the sensors. If I had more time I would go in and adjust everything myself but time isn't on my side." Nila sighs and sets down the PaDD focusing on the Lieutenant. "Well, it was that or stay on my original ship where the Captain hated me, besides I heard from the Captain you guess have a tendency of losing your Ops Chiefs."
"Yeah, you're the third or so since I got here. Sure hope you've got better longevity." He offered a lopsided smile. "At least the curse is just that you'll get transferred off, or something, no horrible fate. Or maybe if you got transferred here under bad circumstances, you're immune." The smile turned sympathetic. "That sounds rough, though, having a captain dead-set against you."
Nila's expression didn't change even at with the smile of Rafe. "Yeah, it tends to happen when he is a fool and doesn't listen to the one thing that would keep the ship from losing every piece of data inside the data banks." She seemed to get heated just at speaking about what happened.
Cassidy's gaze kept the hint of sympathy, though he did sober at her words. "That's tough. I'm sorry. You should do pretty much okay here, though. The Skipper's a good fellow, reasonable. Lets you explain yourself if you've got to."
"I know, he listened to me when we talk." Nila finally smiles just a little as she lifts her coffee and takes a drink. "I don't want to have another issue where I need to go behind the back of the Captain."
"Doesn't make life easy." He had a swig of his coffee. "You had much experience dealing with the Gorn? Or combat situations in general? If not, I wouldn't worry. We're going to get all the Gorn we can stand," Cassidy said wryly.
"No, I've never been in a battle and I only know Gorn through what I have learned about them on my own." Nila seemed to lean back now.
"I'd say this is a place a lot of us are learning on the job," he said. "But really, most of Starfleet hasn't seen this kind of trouble in a while, so we might all be learning on the job."
"Well, you can say that about most unknown things in this line of work," Nila spoke. "Well it's not like Starfleet is actively seeking fights with other species."
"Other empires seem to look for fights with us," Cassidy pointed out. "But no, my last ship postings were all on explorers."
"Same with mine, in fact, this will be the first I've ever seen combat." Nila answered honestly.
He picked up his mug, watching her. "How're you feeling about that?" Cassidy asked, trying to keep his voice light. He took a gulp of coffee, obscuring his face, trying to keep his stance casual so she could brush the question off if she so wanted. He was here to help, not pry.
"Nothing, I'm not happy, scared, or angry. All the stuff my people went through with the Cardassians you learn about it a lot, I guess in a way it was to prepare me to fight." Nila answers the Human as she finishes off her coffee.
"Yeah, I can't pretend I know what that's like," Cassidy said honestly. "So I'm sure you've got it handled. But we're all in this together on Hawaii. You need anything, someone will have your back, okay?"
"I know, but thank you for your words, Lieutenant Cassidy." Nila lifts her cup up. "It was a nice change of pace to chat with someone, lets do it again sometime."
He gave an easy grin. "Any time. You and me are going to be stuck up front together. Might as well not hate each other while we're doing this job."
