Akio had finished his shift and could not eat dinner. As things quieted down around the ship, there was still so much on his mind yet just one name kept bubbling to the surface: Kosu. He had been so busy that he had not yet been able to see her-- out of fear? Out of guilt? Shaking the questions aside, he decided it was time.
He visited Sickbay which was largely empty except for the patients still occupying beds. He found Kosu easily enough. She had her own private area with a curtain.
Immediately upon seeing her lying peacefully, Akio couldn't hold back the tears.
He failed in protecting her... He didn't know what this was... yet she had become more of a crew member for him which was wrong. His hand absent-mindedly touched his collar, feeling the four pips.
He had been advanced to Captain quite quickly. Otherwise, if we was still a Commander, and not in command, such a relationship would be permitted without any issues. Was this even a relationship? A small smile crept along his features... Kosu, still causing a stir, even as she slept.
The smile was dashed away as the burden of command weighed on him and the pit of his stomach grew, seeing Kosu lifeless on the biobed.
He briefly closed his eyes, trying to maintain his composure, even though no one was watching.
Akio put his hand on Kosu's shoulder, the physical connection helped, yet the uncertainty remained.
"We need you, Kosu," Akio whispered. "I need you..."
He bowed down to kiss her forehead, moving a wisp of her hair to the side of her head afterwards.
He needed to leave, or the tears would start falling again. He turned back to Kosu, to get another glimpse of the comatose Engineer before he closed the curtain.
Passing other officers in the hallways, his resolve was strengthened.
They were going into battle, yet he would do a better job protecting his crew.
