Mission:
Ka Hakaka Maikaʻi - The Good Fight
Location: USS Hawaii - CSO's Office
Timeline: Before leaving XFY
[ON]
[CSO's Office]
After getting settled in on the ship, and easily memorizing the route, Saatynn set out to report in to the chief science officer, who was also the second officer of the ship.
He was nervous, there was no denying it, but he wasn't quite so sure why. He was certain it had something to do with his past history with most Vulcans about his choice to turn away from the stricter teachings of Surak. His new chief being a full blooded Vulcan from one of the oldest groups to embrace Surak, made him a tiny bit intimidated. All-in-all though he managed to keep most of it out of his mind and off his face, instead amusing himself into smiling with some old Earth jokes.
He stepped off the turbolift on deck 18 and headed over to the CSO's officer, and pressed the chime.
Tolkath heard the chime and closed the screen on his desk panel. He had been reviewing the personnel file of the newest member of the Science division. This was a rather unusual individual, a Vulcan whom had rejected the path of logic and mental discipline.
Tolkath had encountered few such members of his people in his life. It was rare but not unknown, occasionally an adolescent struggle with gaining initial control of their emotions, sometimes taking several years longer than average. It was slightly more common in children who grew up off world from Vulcan and were exposed to the chaos of other emotionally driven species at an early age.
Those who did not grow out of the trait tended to move away from Vulcan, as they struggled to interact with the general society. Some Vulcans shunned them, Tolkath regarded them as no more of a distraction than any other emotional species. A small reminder of the passion and ego driven chaos that had once nearly driven Vulcan to self destruction.
"Enter" He said, loud enough to be heard.
Saatynn entered and came to attention, "Lieutenant Junior Grade Saatynn reporting for duty, sir."
Tolkath gestured to a seat. "And what is your science specialty Lieutenant?" He asked.
Saatynn smiled--he hadn't had someone ask him that question in a while, "Xenobiology, sir."
Tolkath nodded. "An acceptable field for an exploration vessel. However, we will be moving to combat operations on departure from Xavier. I would suggest refreshing your knowledge of the Gorn and their weapons technology. Do you have a secondary specialty?"
"Quantum Physics." Saatynn said, "it was the only other field I enjoyed."
"Also an acceptable field. Again ireelevant to the upcoming mission. I would suggest some study into Gorn technology, in particular weaponry." Tolkath replied.
"Do you have any questions concerning your duties Lieutenant?" He asked.
"No sir. Though the Gorn do strike me as rather illogical. What are your thoughts on their possible motivations?"
"As I understand it they are acting on a perception of a prexisting claim to some Federation worlds, which they require for additional resources" Tolkath replied. Then returned the interview to track.
"So you have four years experience of positions only near to the Human solar system; after leaving the Academy. This is your first deep space assignment and your first position as Assistant Chief of a division. Yet you have no questions? That would seem to be equally illogical Lieutenant...." He remarked
"So is my whole philosophy on emotions, I've been described by my mate as 'eternally illogical.' As for my lack of questions, I learn better by doing rather than being told something." Saatynn's mouth curled into a smile, "always have."
"And so what is it you think you will be doing as Assistant Chief Science Officer aboard this ship?" Tolkath asked
"Assisting you in the running of the department. I'm the 'go between' as the human saying goes, in the department, if a junior officer needs something, and puts in an official request, it comes to me first before I send it on to you or send it back." Saatynn's response was the description of the position, a by-the-book response.
Tolkath nodded "And what else?"
Saatynn wracked his brain for a response, trying to figure out what would be considered 'acceptable' as an answer, and he had it written all over his face.
"I believe a Second Year Cadet could explain the duties of an assistant department head Lieutenant." Tolkath replied after a few moments without a reply. "So what makes you belive you are qualified for a position you cannot back in his chair and gave Saatyn a long look.
"I think, for now, it is clear that you are not yet ready for advancement to an Assistant Chief of department position. You will be assigned as the ship's Xeno-Anthropologist. You may carry on Lieutenant, dismissed" With no further word Tolkath turned and continued on with his work, leaving the Junior Lieutenant to find their own way out.
