[Deck 6 - Shuttle Traffic Control Center]
Tolkath was the first to arrive, he entered the auxiliary craft control room and went to stand near the rear of the compartment where he could watch both the display on the flight traffic control technician's panel and observe the shuttle bay through the observation window that looked down onto the hanger.
Arriving at the same time as his Security Officers, Winchester turned to Tolkath and asked, in a serious but respectful tone, "Is that bay pressurized?"
Tolkath had not seen anyone in the hanger and could not see the status panel from his position. He shook his head. "I do not know Lieutenant. I would check the hanger status panel or inquire of the Traffic Controller"
Winchester nodded and walked over to a woman near a status console. Clearing his throat, he asked, "Are you the traffic control officer?" Turning her head she said, in a meek voice, " Y..yes sir, how can I help you?". Smiling just a bit to put her at ease Winchester asked, " Is that bay pressurised?" She smiled and turned her head to check the status display and replied, " Yes sir, it is." Nodding his thanks to her, Winchester was by this point quickly thinking how best to deploy his men.
"Captain on deck!" A technician called as Tachibana entered the Traffic Control center.
Akio wanted to see the status of the Wyoming shuttle.
"Sir," The duty Traffic Controller approached, "Wyoming reports Shuttle Riverton is inbound with Captain Carson and his command team aboard. ETA is... four minutes. I have not yet opened the bay doors. Your orders, sir?"
"Well, if it was a trap, I'd expect more spacecraft than just one shuttle. What do the fighters see out there?" Akio asked.
"So far just the Riverton Captain," the Controller replied. "Their sensor scans are not strong enough to over come the interference, so they confirm there are life signs onboard, but not what type."
"Very well. If there is any indication there are Gorn aboard, let us know. Open the doors, I will be below," Akio said, turning to head towards the lower level as the formation was assembling.
Cassidy, one of the last to leave his post on the bridge, wasn't too far behind the captain, and even as he arrived he was making sure his collar was fastened up properly to the throat, his comm-badge straight. He gave Tachibana a wry, apologetic glance as he fell into step beside him. "I know I was part of the paranoia party, Skipper, but on the off-chance it's good news we should probably greet them with smiles as well as phasers." His tone made it clear enough - if it was a disaster and an ambush, he, a helmsman, was not going to save the day in a crowded firefight.
"I don't think we're alone in the paranoia party, as you say, Lieutenant," Akio said softly. He had come to appreciate the culture of his senior staff, although Akio found him searching for their pointed ear science officer. "Your concerns are also mine, and the marines will be more than ready to shake and fire, if necessary. How good are you with a phaser, Lieutenant?" Akio asked amusingly, hoping levity would ease the tension surrounding this moment.
"Me? Don't sweat it, Skipper, if it's a Gorn Trojan Horse attack I'll drop them all before you can blink. You can send the Marines off to go take a nap," Cassidy deadpanned. "I'd rather it's Starfleet, though, so we don't have to reveal me as the Federation's secret weapon so soon."
Akio chuckled, "You keep talking like that, you may be on the ground with those marines once we're on the ground."
Tolkath followed the rest of the party down to the hanger bay level and found a place to await the arrival of the shuttle.
Winchester quickly excused both himself and his men, and they quickly flooded down to the shuttle bay. Jake quickly began issuing his orders, pointing to different defensive positions for them to take up. By the time he was done, Winchester had a man in each corner of the room, 2 where the front of the shuttle would be once it landed, and 2 where the back would be. Pulling his own phaser he stood off to the side and waited for its arrival.
[Near space]
Out in the mist, the Knights skimmed along next to the shuttle. Visual inspection showed that all the markings were in order, even if the occupants were hidden behind the reflective window.
The pilots stayed poised, but it was beginning to look like things would be simple this time. As the Hawaii drew closer in the distance, the craft lined themselves up for a smooth approach, five sets of eyes were carefully watching the mysterious shuttle and scanning the sky all around, ever vigilant.
"Riverton to Knight Zero-One, maintaining visual contact and initiating final approach vectors, thanks for the escort!" the shuttle transmitted.
As the flight came in for the final approach, two valkyries stayed with the Riverton, while the other three broke off and began to patrol around the starship.
[Shuttle Bay]
Major West was monitoring the marine detachment. They were to be part of the formation, yet he ensured each marine at least had a phaser. While he understood everyone's concerns, he wasn't sure one shuttle was quite a trojan horse type scenario, yet he wasn't willing to take the chance either.
"Sergeant Major! Make sure the dress and cover is on point. You may want to hop over and help the fleeters, since I don't think we have a Command Chief," West remarked.
Bolingbroke and the Marines of the Second Special Ops Team were deployed in the corridor leading to the shuttlebay's upper level, in combat gear and weapons-ready. If is was some kind of attack he would lead an anti-boarding party out through a maintenance hatch and catch the shuttle occupants in a cross fire. The team waited quietly for word of who those occupants were...
[Bridge]
Arthur was on the bridge keeping tabs on the various other departments and on the security teams on the bay. "Comm link stable, sir." He said through a stable internal link to Winchester
"Good", Winchester said quietly. "Keep this link open until further notice".
[Shuttle Bay]
The outer shuttle bay doors whooshed open as the shuttle and fighter escorts entered the bay. A forcefield activated after the craft cleared the outer door and the outer bay started to pressurize while the outer bay doors started their closing procedure.
As Akio watched the doors close from the inner bay, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He had taken a position at the front of the formation.
The inner bay doors whooshed open as Flight Control personnel in yellow and red maneuvered the shuttle into the inner bay using an anti-grav tug. With a formation this size, powering the shuttle on its own would be dangerous.
Akio felt himself stand up straighter with his shoulders back as the shuttle came to stop in front of him.
"FORMATION, ATTEN-TION!" Akio commanded.
The shuttle door opened and gave birth to two Security officers who scanned the area. Then, came the rest of the Senior Staff of the USS Wyoming, indicated by their 3-4 pips on their collar.
The senior staff took up positions in front of their respective counterparts in the formation.
Cassidy tried to not let his respectful stance sag as he let out a slow sigh of relief. He didn't usually enjoy being wrong; war was going to turn out a whole menagerie of changes on that front.
Captain Carson stopped in front of Akio. He was a few inches shorter than Akio, yet had a wisp of white hair and a grizzled face.
Akio saluted the Captain, "Sir, welcome aboard the USS Hawaii."
Captain Carson returned the salute, "Thank you Commander Tachibana and thank you to the rest of the Hawaii crew. You do not know how long we've been looking for you."
Carson then held out his hand and Akio shook it as the formation dispersed on its own, relieved to find their compatriots.
Tolkath nodded politely to the Wyoming's senior staff as they disembarked the shuttle. While it did not show he was relieved that the vessel contained the ship's crew and not a Gorn boarding party. His scientific curiosity was piqued by the Gorn-style energy signatures emanating from the ship and he intended to ask questions about the process at the upcoming briefing.
Winchester, while nodding politely, was not entirely convinced everything was on the level, and judging by the looks on his teams faces, neither were they. Eyeing them with hard, old, emotionless eyes, he drew his tricorder from his belt and began to scan each one of them and their shuttle for anything abnormal.
"Stand down it's the Wyoming crew!" Came over Bolingbroke's communicator headset "Stand down" He passed the word to the rest of the team. The tension melted and they relaxed, a few jokes were shared and they started back towards the barracks to stand down.
