As the two doctors left, the doors of the office slid closed behind them, leaving them alone to discuss whatever they wanted.
Doctor Aldana and Sombra rounded the corner and approached the turbolift door, where Aldana pressed the call button and waited. S/he looked to be sure Doctor T'Lara was with hir before asking; “Is there any subject you’d like me to fill you in on first before I get started?”
T'Lara stepped into the lift. “I would like to be informed on Lieutenant Kosu’s case, and I would like to be briefed on any running medical cases in sickbay.”
“Well, if memory serves, I believe that was Doctor Amur’s case, but I’m told Lieutenant Kosu has recovered and been released, so the case has been closed, so I’m not sure why you’re asking about that. Sickbay is quiet there are no current cases that have been reported. The other two doctors, the nursing staff and I have been working returning sickbay to normal after our recent battle.”
T'Lara blinked. “According to your head nurse, Lieutenant Kosu hasn’t fully recovered. Maybe I should discuss the Lieutenant’s case with Doctor Amur.”
Doctor Aldana felt a strange sensation come over hir for a moment. S/he stumbled back, catching hir head in hir right hand as s/he steadied hirself against the turbolift wall with hir dominant left. For the second time today, s/he felt as though s/he knew, s/he absolutely knew things were different. It was as if there were an echo that washed over hir. A sharp stabbing pain filled hir head right behind hir eyes as a torrent of ‘new’ information came flooding into hir brain all at once.
Sombra became agitated, he nudged Alpha, emitting a wine. He circled in place unsure what to do. He pawed at hir trying to get hir attention. He steeled himself ready to accept hir weight should s/he collapse.
T'Lara looked to Aldana. “Are you alright, Doctor? Are you in need of medical assistance? I can help.” She said. “Hold cart, computer!”
“Wait, Lieutenant Deeli Kosu; no, it’s alright, I’m on the same page now.” Aldana righted hirself performing a ‘Picard Maneuver’ on the hem of hir uniform top. Hir head cleared now, s/he acted as if nothing had happened:
“Well, if memory serves, I believe that is Doctor Amur’s case; fortunately, no one’s an expert on what happened to Lieutenant Kosu. The details are sketchy at best.
The facts as they stand are:
1. Ms Kosu was dosed somewhere on the Gorn cruiser by an apparent new bioweapon somehow. We have marine reports, but we can’t ask her what happened.
2. The pathogen attacked her nervous system, shutting down central and autonomic functions.
3. The pathogen appears to have been specifically targeted to Terran biology, Lieutenant Kosu’s being Betazoid probably saved her life.
Everything other than that’s in the ‘wait-n-see’ phase.
T'Lara nodded. “That is interesting. I would like to read the full report, doctor.” She said as she activated the lift again.
Aldana wasn’t sure what to say to that, there wasn’t much s/he could do for that. “I’d like to discuss the logistics of sickbay. I think it’d be best for the medical staff if they stayed in a routine that’s familiar and comfortable to them so they’re not getting worked up about major changes just for the sake of making changes.” S/he looked at her hopeful she’d hear what s/he had to say.
Again, T'Lara nodded. “Of course, doctor, I will implement changes where I deem them necessary, but far be it for me to interfere in a fully running department. It would be prudent to discuss now.”
Aldana wasn’t sure how s/he felt about the sound of that. S/he decided to try and keep an open mind, as s/he hoped T'Lara would too. “For starters, we have a full medical staff, almost as much as a regular hospital ship. I have them divided into four teams with three shifts on duty or on call, and the fourth shift completely off duty on a rotation that allows everyone an average 96 consecutive hours completely off-duty with a minimum of 72 consecutive hours off every 10 days.” Doctor Aldana took a breath, smiled, and continued. “Each shift is 12-hours on, 12-hours off with two shifts always overlapping, so we consistently have people to cover meal breaks, personal days, and the abundance of people on staff for emergency situations. Any questions so far?”
“No, doctor, sounds to me you got things running smoothly,” T'Lara said, “I will be needing the working schedules from you then and I will look them over.” The lift doors open, and she stepped into the corridor. She turned to Aldana. “Do you drink, Doctor?”
Aldana hesitated, s/he had to think through the short-hand for a moment, “Do you mean alcohol? Not often – the guyzos can’t share in it – though I have been known to experiment from time to time. Do you drink, Doctor?”
“I used to drink,” T'Lara replied. “I still do on occasion. I thought maybe the department could have drinks together. Get to know each other better. It is just a suggestion.”
Sombra nuzzled Aldana’s hand, and s/he ruffled his ears as the trio walked. “That sounds like a splendid idea, just so long as adult beverage consumption isn’t mandatory.”
T'Lara shrugged. “Well, doctor, when not on duty, hard be it for me to make something you consume or not mandatory. I think it should be something casual and feel more comfortable. You understand where I am going right?”
Aldana hesitated for a moment, s/he wondered if s/he was overthinking the idea of drinking a little. S/he decided to move past it. Looking thoughtful for a moment s/he tried to think outside the box. Could a Vulcan be suggesting what s/he thought she was suggesting? “I think the word you’re looking for is ‘party?’”
T'Lara looked away and then shook her head. “No, a party requires a lot more planning and organizing then what I am thinking off. I am thinking of something more casual and spontaneous.”
Just then their ride came to an end, and the turbolift doors parted. Sombra yipped quietly and pranced out leading the way, pausing only to look over his shoulder and wait.
Aldana chuckled as s/he decided not to nit-pick about the potential spontaneity of a party. “Well regardless what you want to call it, I’ll be there if the chance ever arises.” S/he hesitated for a moment to see if hir superior wanted to venture down the corridor ahead of hir.
T'Lara walked up ahead while turning half to Aldana. She just nodded. “Is there anything else we should discuss?”
Aldana took a deep breath as Sombra hesitated enough for hir to catch up and the trio continued down the corridor. “Just that it may take some adjustment, but I think it will be agreeable to work with you, Doctor.” S/he half smiled, but then remembered Vulcans didn’t usually care for such things.
They continued to sickbay in silence.
