One of the first processes that was required of any new transferee was to make sure that their physical was taken so they could be passed fit in order to take up their duty.
Kevin was keen to make sure he could do this so made his way to Sickbay and entered. He looked around to see if anyone was available to ask about how soon he could book to get a physical taken.
Sickbay was calm and presently seeing a lull. The CMO wasn’t presently nearby since s/he was somewhere in the bowls of sickbay performing some remedial stocking or other maintenance task. Instead a tri-colored domesticated male thylacinid – a canine-like marsupial similar in appearance to a wolf, or in this case an Earthling German Shephard Dog – popped up from where he was resting and approached the pale human – by the scent of him – he looked him over, sniffing at his feet, and sat squarely in front of the stranger giving a dog-like smile and panting. ~Someone’s here,~ he projected silently.
The male marsupial dog-like animal wore a service vest in a ‘medical teal’ and a matching collar with a stylized black accent. Off the collar dangled a tag in the shape of the Starfleet ‘arrowhead’ with the old-style medical symbol on it. The reverse being engraved with Sombra’s name and information about his microchip and how to scan it. The service vest was decorated with various patches that identified Sombra as a service animal, one in particular that stood out read, “Please ASK before petting.”
Presently Doctor Aldana emerged from somewhere carrying a PADD with stylus and a medical tricorder. “Ah, a guest, beg pardon, I surmised by the tone of Sombra’s voice there wasn’t an emergency. Thank you for waiting, what can I help you with?
“I’m Ensign Kevin Kilbane, Doctor. I’ve just transferred in and I was informed that in order to take up my assigned duty, I had to come and get a physical” Kevin replied, handing over a PADD with his medical record on it, well, most of it, some parts where he’d been treated for injuries sustained while on active Intel duty were blank.
“I’m happy to do it now if you’re free to Sir?” he added.
Accepting the PADD and tucking it away somewhere Aldana commented, “I see no reason to delay. Please step over here.” Doctor Aldana gestured to the larger more sophisticated biobed which at present was unoccupied. “If you wouldn’t mind removing your top, that would help.”
Removing his top, Kevin stepped over to, and sat on, the biobed he was offered. “I have a slight tightness in my shoulder Sir, it comes and goes, but in the last few days it’s come back” Kevin said.
A thought of jokingly putting on sun glasses briefly flitted through the doctor’s mind – before quickly banishing it – as s/he admired him. “That’s an impressive array of scars; can you talk about them?” S/he brought out a medical tricorder and began taking scans beginning with his back. S/he wasn’t sure which one, a quick scan revealed the answer. “How often does it seem to act up? Would you prefer a natural treatment – I am well versed in several massage techniques – or a chemical treatment?”
“It’s happened a couple of times in the last few weeks” Kevin replied “If there’s a natural treatment Sir, I’m happy to go with that” he added.
“Well there are some herbal remedies, but they’re not as affective or as long-term as a good old-fashioned back rub… or in this case a shoulder rub.” Aldana continued the medical scans with the tricorder as s/he talked. “Lie back if you would please? It looks like you’re overdue for a full set of medical scans. You’ll also have to have some boosters and immunizations for the area we’re about to go into.”
Just about to lie down, the PADD he’d handed to the Doctor sounded, and Kevin said, “If I may Sir?” he gestured to the PADD.
The Kazarite hybrid fished for the PADD and retrieved it. S/he looked at the screen, but it was asking for a thumbprint ID. S/he handed it to Kilbane flashing a smile.
“Thank you” Kevin accepted the PADD, checked the message, put in a code and handed it back saying “It’s just verification that all my medical records have now been released to you Sir. Sorry for the delay, I just had to check that it was safe to do so with SFI as some of the injuries I’ve received have happened whilst on duty there.”
He handed the PADD back and lay down as asked saying “I understand, thank you.”
Looking at the PADD Aldana scrolled through and watched as the display updated before hir eyes. S/he skimmed it briefly muttering to hirself, “hmm, multiple signs of repeated damage to the phalanges… indication of scaring around the…” …but there was work to be finished. The doctor would have to finish reading the details later. Aldana brought up the medical arch, and activated it suggesting, “just breath normally.” S/he prayed briefly that his ordeal hadn’t made him claustrophobic or afraid of medical procedures.
Kevin watched as the arch closed over him, then closed his eyes and started to regulate his breathing. In…out…in…out…in…
So far, so good, no panic attacks, Aldana set the scan field to auto. “Do you enjoy any reading?”
“I do” Kevin replied “I enjoy adventure stories, and ironically enough, the flip side of that coin, the writings of Vulcan Master of meditation, B'Erren. Though I would hasten to add that those writings will probably lose something in their translation from their original context being that I can’t read Vulcan and have to read them in English” he added.
Aldana wasn’t sure what English was, but s/he thought it might be something similar or related to Federation Standard. Nonetheless; “good, I hope you enjoy them. Me, I enjoy reading…” There was an alert tone, and the surgical arch retracted, “…would you look at that, all done. You may sit up again.” Aldana reached for a hypospray.
"So, how am I faring then Doctor Aldana?" Kevin asked.
Doctor Aldana smiled. "We'll take care of those vaccinations and boosters, and then you'll be free to go." S/he loaded the hypospray with one of the three-in-ones he needed. "Arm please?"
Kevin offered his arm, and once the vaccinations and boosters had been given, he jumped down off the bed.
"Thank you Doctor Aldana, I really appreciate you being able to fit me in at such short notice so I can have my physical done to complete my readiness for duty report" he said "I best get back" he finished.
With a smile and a nod, he turned and made his way out of Sickbay and towards the Security department.
